Biohome Ultimate 5kg

Biohome Ultimate is the most popular Biohome filter media. It's enormous surface area supports growth of both aerobic (nitrifying) and anaerobic bacteria (de-nitrifying), removing not only ammonia (NH₃) and nitrites (NO₂) but also nitrates (NO₃). Biohome Ultimate contains trace elements, which helps speed up colonization of the media by beneficial bacteria. The trace elements are responsible for the reddish colour of the media.
Because the available surface area of Biohome is much larger than that of other media, using Biohome filter media in your filter will increase efficiency of your filter and will reduce the need for water changes. Please make sure to provide sufficient mechanical filtration to prevent Biohome media from clogging with debris.

This biological filter media is perfect for canister filters and power filters.

1kg of media is suggested for each 25 gallons of water to reduce nitrates to 5-10pmm in ordinary community tanks.
2kg of media per 25 gallons is recommended for heavily stocked aquariums with african cichlids or predators to see reduction in nitrates.

Biohome has a 42% porosity and a specific surface area of 7300 ft² per kg.

1kg of Biohome has the volume of approximately  1.25L.

With this media, zero ammonia and nitrite reading can be expected in 3 to 4 weeks. Reduction of nitrates can be observed in 4 to 6 months. 

Biohome is a sintered glass filter media made of heat treated silica sand. It can be used as a biological media in canister filters, power filters, internal filters and sumps. It has an enormous surface area, which allows it to house large amounts of beneficial bacteria in a very small space. The surface of the media gets colonized by two types of aerobic nitrifying bacteria - Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter. The first converts ammonia (NH3) into less toxic nitrites (NO2) and the latter consumes nitrites (NO2) and excretes nitrates (NO3). Biohome contains a protected labyrinth of tunnels that are occupied by anaerobic bacteria (denitrifying bacteria), which breaks down nitrates (NO3) into free nitrogen.

The filter media is shipped with complementary filter starter gel balls that are full of beneficial bacteria.
